Garmin adds a powerful, sharp-looking and compact device for cycle computer its already strong Sports & Fitness GPS lineup with the introduction of the Edge 500. Garmin is the leading sponsor of a professional road racing team, and the company tapped designers and engineers are the professionals the knowledge of the new Edge 500 to create. The result is a much scaled-device (compared to the models 605 and 705), which packs 15 functions, and is compatible with an optional heart rate strap, cadence/speed sensor, and third-party power meters.
Compared with the wider, longer and heavier Edge 705 and 605 models, the Edge 500 provides a more traditional cycle computer appearance and form. However, the 500 exceptional look and finish detailing, accented with a carbon fiber-like tissue image in its face plate and soft-touch, Garmin-blue trim and white. It has a solid feel, and proved to be completely waterproof immersion in my test.
Like the other models of Garmin Sport & Fitness and foremost, the Edge 500 has a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. I was able to get the claimed battery life of 18 hours during my mountain bike and road tests. Also in line with other Garmins, the Edge 500 can be connected to a PC using its included USB cable, and detailed data can be stored and displayed on the free Garmin Connect Service.

Handlebar and stem assembly is one of the weaknesses of the 705 and 605 models, the new Garmin 500 fixed. The 500 uses a base plate that attaches quickly and easily finds a stem or handlebars with included different-sized rubber O-rings. The computer mounts by clicking 1/4-turn in the floor plate.
Like the other cycle computers available in Garmin line, the Edge 500 has many functions (see link to the manual. Pdf), which all customized in several display modes can be, depending on your preferences. Not only that you may display three-page set of different configurations that you can easily cycle through you while driving. It is a very impressive and wide range of display options. You can also switch between one and eight data fields to choose to have to be adjusted automatically by screen display, the font sizes and segments of the display.
As an example of the usefulness of this function, I have three display pages. The first is a general screen with speed, average speed, distance, time of day, and the heart rate. The second is a custom rock-climbing “screen with total ascent, vertical speed, grade percentage and amount. The third is a custom screen with the rate of heart rate, percentage of max, and zone.
